There is an invisible ceiling out there that I can’t see but I know it’s there because I run into it every time I race.
Bam!
I hate it because it’s limiting my potential as an athlete. I’ve lived with the ceiling now for about four years. The ceiling was set four years ago that I broke under the nine hour barrier in the Ironman-distance at the inaugural Blue Devil Triathlon in North Carolina. I have never been able to repeat the absolute near perfect performance that I achieved on that day.
I race against the clock. I want to go faster. I need to break through the ceiling. In order to do that, I recognize that I need to change my approach to training, racing and life.
I will change.
I’m leaving my job at Capital One so I no longer have the commitment of a full-time job. I need more time to train and, perhaps more importantly, I need more time to rest. I will no longer have to wake up at 5AM to squeeze in 2-3 hours of exercise before work then find the energy to run after work. I want a slower pace of life (“not rushed”) so that I can read the paper in the morning and spend time playing with my dogs while I exercise 4-6 hours a day every day.
I’m committing to practicing yoga three times a week. I need the improvements in flexibility, strength, core strength, and balance that it provides to stay healthy and injury-free as I ramp up my training volumes.
I will create a focused plan and stick with it. I have only one goal this summer – Roth. I have a time in the back of my mind, but I’m not ready to share it with the world. Every workout and every race that I do prior is to get me ready for Roth. Simple! I need the focus that a plan affords and I will soon have the time to meet that plan without worrying about work conflicts.
I will enjoy life. I only have one life so want to live it.
Cheers,
David
