Get Your Rear in Gear: Goal-Setting for 2009

With the start of the New Year and early beginning of the triathlon season, now is an excellent time to think about goals for 2009 – and not just triathlon goals.

Last week I sat down with my friend and life coach, Lee Knight, the Overachiever Coach. Lee’s niche, not surprising, is working with overachievers. In my experience, most triathletes tend to be overachievers – folks who are accomplished and successful in what they’ve done, but perhaps, like me, overwhelmed with opportunities and not sure what the next goal or milestone should be.

What surprise is that the one goal I really wanted to work on had very little to do with triathlon and my business.

Lee is currently offering a goal-setting promotion called “Get Your Rear in Gear” so I figured it was time to get moving on my own goals for the year. Here’s the description of the special:

In just 45 minutes, you’ll outline your vision, clarify your priorities, set tangible goals, and establish ongoing systems to make change stick. It helps to have a professional coach walk you through a structured process so you know you’ll come out with a focused and achievable plan for the year (and perhaps your life!).

For my session, Lee walked me through a number of exercises and worksheets starting at a high level by having me write down my satisfaction with different elements of life like my career, romance, money, recreation, health, etc. We then spent some time writing and talking about the joys and concerns in my life, and I wrote down my key priorities and projects in the short term and long term.

The session culminated with a vision statement around what was the single aspect of my life that I wanted to work on. I chose to work on furthering my relationship with my girlfriend, Krista Schultz, and integrating out lives more fully. With Lee’s coaching, I came up with a strategy and some goals towards achieving my vision. The crux of this exercise and part that that I found most helpful was for me to then identify the habits and systems I needed to have in order to achieve my vision. Example of habits are: (1) I will set aside time each night to talk with Krista and (2) I will drop everything that I am doing if Krista has a problem.

All in all, well worth the time and small cost ($75).
