Follow up to my AMTP Assessment plus Injury Update

Me at Lake Keowee in SC“When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.”
– Will Rogers

I’m in a hole. Actually, I’ve been in a hole for quite a while with a right hip and leg injury that’s plagued me since early 2008, but I’ve chosen to not aggressively treat it until this year. Up until this injury, I’ve been able to get by for the most part with the approach of: “I’ll take a few days easy and the injury will go away.”

This approach doesn’t work for me any more.

Coming out of my AMPT (Athletic Movement and Performance Test) assessment at the end of January with PT Natalie King of Schrier Physical Therapy, I learned that excessive foot pronation and limited ankle mobility that is causing compensation patterns in the leg, hip and pelvis, which puts abnormal stress on my joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons and ultimately has led to my right gluteal and leg issues.

After several weeks of physical therapy with Natalie, being fitted for customs orthotics, and diligently performing my stretches and strengthening exercises, my leg is doing much better and I am now able to run relatively pain-free – which I haven’t been able to say for a long time now.

However, I need to continue to proactively and aggressively strengthen and stretch my core and hips if I want to continue to be an athlete. This is my takeaway from this experience.

I look forward to building my run fitness back and picking up a few races later in the summer.

I will write more about the impact of being injured from a mental aspect in a future blog. It’s been a frustrating experience!

Live life richly and boldly!
