Legendary former CEO of GE Jack Welch once said, “Control your own destiny or someone else will.”
A personal mission statement is a brief description of what YOUR life is about - a blueprint of the things most important to you against which you can focus your energy, actions, behaviors and decisions.
Why do you need a personal mission statement?
This dialog between Alice and the Chesire Cat from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland gets to the answer:
Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don’t much care where.
Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.
Alice: …so long as I get SOMEWHERE.
Cat: Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.
Without a personal mission statement, how do you know the best choice to make when faced with a difficult decision? You don’t.
If you have personal mission statement, you can use it as a filter through which you pass the difficult decisions to get to the choice(s) that fits best with what you’re about.
Your personal mission statement doesn’t need to be fancy or long. It can be a poem, a declaration or simply a few words that resonate with you.
Here’s my personal mission statement:
I create a world of PASSION and PRESENCE by INSPIRING and ENRICHING the lives of others.
What’s YOUR personal mission statement?
Live strongly and boldly!

David, this is the shortest posting this year but probably the most important for personal and for business. I dont think too many people do it or are even aware of it. We all get to he point where we dont think we are making a difference or doing what we should. Having a mission statement gives me something to come back to whether I am looking forward planning or looking back at what I have done or not done. I thought it was neat that you shared your mission statement. Thanks for the blog. Peter
