Why climb up and down a mountain 5x on a Saturday? Well, why not…?

This past weekend, Mike Guzek and I ran up and down the Mt. Sanitas trail in Boulder five times climbing more than a mile vertically for a total of  15 miles.

Why run up and down a trail five times?

Well, why does a dog like to stick its head outside the window of a moving car?

I honestly don’t know.

The dog just does.

I think we’re like the dogs in that regard.

Mike Guzek and David Glover on top of Mt. Sanitas in BoulderWe’re both long time triathletes with a bunch of Ironman distance races under out belt so we like endurance activities.  Mike had a found a website for Mt. Sanitas Records that showed record times for ascents, loops, 5x, 12 hours and 24 hours.  We’re not that crazy so we opted to try 5 laps…just because we thought it might be challenging.

Our time of 3:58 was a more than an hour slower than the reported record of 2:50, but, heck, we still got it done and no one was there to watch us cross the finish line anyways.

With about 15 minutes of time planning, it was relatively easy to throw together our own informal event to give ourselves a different sort of challenge than an Ironman triathlon

What challenges are you doing this winter to stay motivated through the colder months?

We’re also looking for new ideas…

Live life richly and without regret!
