Now that the holiday parties, gluttonous meals and family travel are finally over, I have some time to reflect back on 2007 and start thinking ahead to what I want to accomplish in 2008.
2007 was a good year for me: I remain in excellent health; I set some new personal best times while helping others reach their own triathlon goals; and I still work from home as a small business owner (EnduranceWorks, LLC).

Highlights from 2007 include:
8:51 finish at the Quelle Challenge - the largest Ironman-distance race in the world. Although I fell short of my sub 8:30 goal, I raced a near perfect race and finished in the top 25 in a competitive field second only to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. My host family, the Speigl’s have practically adopted me!
Winning Vineman for the second time and being inducted into Vineman the Hall of Fame - my image is on the back of all the 2007 finishers’ medals! Vineman has always treated me well and and remains one of my favorite races.
Working with Kyle Yost and Greg Safko to pull off the inaugural SavageMan Half Triathlon in Deep Creek, MD to benefit the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation. With more than 5,500 feet of climbing on the bike including the 31% grade “Westernport Wall” and another 1,000 feet on the run, this is the most challenging half course in the world. We received rave reviews across board from participants and spectators like.
Writing a 50,000 word fantasy novel in 30 days as part of National Novel Writing Month. Halfway through, I had given up after falling behind the curve by a few days, but changed my mind and aggressively wrote and finished early. Thank you to Shawn and Christina for keeping me on track and motivated!
Coaching more than 20 athletes - I learned a bunch, helped them a bunch and made a bunch of new friends in the process.
Just watching events including Virginia Run Sprint, Reston Triathlon, Chesapeakeman and 2x Cyclocross races. One of my favorite memories is hanging out with Jen and Princess as we watched, Brady, win Chesapeakeman. I was originally planning to “just watch” Ironman Louisville, but, well, that’s another story.
Setting a 2:46 marathon PR at Disney the day after running a 1:22 in the Disney Half Marathon the day before.
Finally, but perhaps most importantly, developing new friendships and growing existing friendships.

My friend, Farhad, who I met at Reston Bikram Yoga. Farhad carried USAT officials on his motorcycle at both the Luray and the Smallwood Triathlons this summer.
Any regrets from 2007? No, not really.
As far as 2008….
