SOF Academy: I Earn My Nickname “Monkey Butt”

This was one of the lighter moments during my week long adventure at the Special Operations Force Academy in Virginia Beach, VA.

After a morning of SCUBA training in the pool in Virginia Beach, we drove to Lake Rawlings on Tuesday afternoon to practice our open water SCUBA diving.

On Wednesday around noon, while we were packing up our gear (personal gear, air tanks, BCD’s, wetsuits, etc) in order to head back to our base of operations at Fort Story, the instructors decided to drop us for a PT session. I was midway between changing from wet to dry shorts with only a towel wrapped around my waist when this happened.

“Form up on me!” shouted Instructor Earle.

Clutching my towel around my waist, I ran over with the rest of my classmates to face the instructor.

“Instructor, Earle, request permission to put on shorts,” I asked.

“No.”

“Drop!”

We dropped down to the push-up position again.

“Mountain Climbers. Begin!”

Mountain climbers are an exercise in which you start the exercise from a push-up position with arms locked out, legs extended and back straight. Keeping your arms in place, you then bring one leg at a time up to your chest at a running pace.

My towel stayed on my waist for about 10 seconds then I was bare ass naked. Unfortunately, I had raw, chafed skin from several days of PT. I was later told that my behind looked something like this photo:

Monkey Butt

“Glover, put some shorts on.” Earle was laughing at me. In fact, everyone was laughing at me including a few people not with our group who just happened to be standing around the dive building grinned.

I grinned, stood up and quickly donned my tri shorts then dropped back down to a push-up position.

I had earned my new name - “Monkey Butt.”

BTW, I still can’t sleep on my back because of the chafing.

Cheers,
David
