The Goofy Challenge: Part II
What and Why I’m technically not a runner – at least I don’t consider myself one. I’m a triathlete. I like to run – and can run relatively fast – but I have a hard time running for the pure enjoyment of running. I need a goal – an endpoint – a destination – a purpose – in order to want to run. My best marathon time to date was 2:53 at Myrtle Beach Marathon in 2003. At the halfway point of Myrtle Beach, I was on pace to run a 2:45 but I fell apart in the last ten miles. I still want a 2:45 marathon time. When I met up with some friends a few months back, one of them...

The Goofy Challenge - What a great name for an event and appropriately named! The idea of running a 13.1 mile half marathon on Saturday then running a 26.2-mile marathon the very next day sounds kind of “goofy” in a warped sort of way, which exactly what Disney calls this event on Jan 6-7 in Orlando, Florida. The first question that might come to mind is, “Why do it?” My answer: “Because it’s something new.” I’ve run 25 marathons – 4 standalone and 21 at the tail end of an Ironman distance race. I wanted to do something a little more...

I want to tell people about the event and they will be curious to know about the “booty.” About the event (from the Website): “The fifth annual 24 HOURS OF BOOTY … is the one and only 24-hour road cycling charity event in the country! This unique and fun event is fully supported on a traffic-free, gently rolling loop — the “BOOTY LOOP” — situated in the beautiful Myers Park neighborhood just...

I am a front of the (FOP) pack triathlete. I chase the leaders or am the leader. I am not used to being passed, especially by ten years old. In the second weekend of February I found myself crawling along at a snail’s pace as hundreds of skiers passed me. I could only watch them go by as I wondered if I could even finish. December 17 I picked up a free copy of Vermont Sports from a small pile of magazines. One of the headlines caught my eye – “CSM: Two Ultimate Days of Skiing.” “What is CSM?” I wondered. Laura and I were in Stowe, Vermont for the weekend. Taking advantage of...
