What’s It Like Not Working at All?

This is a question that I’ve asked myself numerous times in the last 13 years since I entered the 9 to 5 workforce. Well, since my last day at Capital One on April 28th, I now know the answer to that question (at least for me). My schedule during the day has shifted. When working full-time during the week, I had to squeeze in workouts and run errands either before or after work and sometimes at lunch. I saved all the long bike rides for the weekends. Now, I typically wait until the start of the regular work day (i.e. 9AM) to begin my workouts, run errands, etc. I can do 100 mile...

Luray Triathlon Race Report by the Race Director (Me)

This race started for me almost a year ago…. August 2005 I want to produce a triathlon. I’ve toyed with the idea of producing my own race but have been hesitant to make the commitment. I’ve been working with the Reston Triathlon as one of the Race Directors (there’s 7 of us now) for several years so have the experience to do it and the perspective to know that it’s a lot of work and potentially a huge financial risk. The demand by the local triathlon community for more races is high as evidenced by many of the local races filling up quickly. September I decide to produce two or...

My South Carolina Work Week: From a Triathlete’s Perspective

My South Carolina Work Week: From a Triathlete’s Perspective

Imagine working a 40-hour per week job, but instead of putting on khaki’s and a Polo shirt then driving to work, you either put on a wetsuit then jump in a lake or put on bike shorts/top that hop on your bike. I did this for a week. This was my annual training week in SC. Training for an Ironman was my “job” for the week. Total training hours for this week: 37 hr 35 min Here’s what my friend, Steve Smith, and I did: Saturday, April 29: Bike: 4 hr 10 min w/ 7,500 ft of vertical – Skyline Drive from Lake Arrowhead near Luray, VA. Sunday: Bike: 2 hr 30 min...

Race Report: My First DNF at the Kinetic 1/2 Ironman

Kinetic 1/2 Ironman (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run) at Lake Anna State Park near Fredericksburg, VA. I knew going into this race that my left calf muscle might give me trouble. A week and a half before, the lower part of the soleus (inner calf muscle) had tightened near where it attaches to the Achilles’ tendon. I finished my run but the muscle did not loosen up. When I ran again a few days later, it tightened again. I took almost a week off from running before the race to give time for healing. Up until the run, the race was uneventful for me except for the rain on...

Crashing Through My Glass Ceiling: What Does It Take?

Crashing Through My Glass Ceiling: What Does It Take?

There is an invisible ceiling out there that I can’t see but I know it’s there because I run into it every time I race. Bam! I hate it because it’s limiting my potential as an athlete. I’ve lived with the ceiling now for about four years. The ceiling was set four years ago that I broke under the nine hour barrier in the Ironman-distance at the inaugural Blue Devil Triathlon in North Carolina. I have never been able to repeat the absolute near perfect performance that I achieved on that day. I race against the clock. I want to go faster. I need to break through the...
