Paul returns to Triathlon after 8 Years of Focusing on Job and Kids

I thought I would share this race report from on my clients, Paul Fedor, who recently returned to triathlon after taking an 8 +/- year break to focus on his job and kids.   Ten or so years ago, Paul and I used to ride together quite frequently.   Luray International on 8/14 was Paul’s first race back and the first step in getting him ready for his first Ironman-distance race in 2011.  I enjoyed reading his report and thought he took away some valuable lessons learned for anyone new to the sport or returning after a hiatus, too. Here’s Paul’s race report: Luray...

Reflections on Luray Triathlon and Changing Ironman Goals

I feel tired. One week after the Luray Triathlon and I feel worse than if I had raced an Ironman (I’ve done 2 so far this year).  I’m mentally and emotionally drained. But, this is what I’m about: “Using high energy to achieve a calculated outcome” per my Personalysis assessment from when I worked as a business analyst at Capital One.  I give 110% for a couple weeks then I crash. I’m still crashed. When I think about the things I’ve done in my life, I am perhaps most proud of the Luray Triathlon.  Yes, it’s a business, but it’s a also...

Luray Triathlon: Viewpoint from the Race Director: Race Weekend

This continues my “RACE REPORT” on the Luray Triathlon from the Race Director’s perspective. Please read the “Pre-race” article before you read this one if you haven’t already: CLICK HERE. This question that I both love and hate the most on race weekend: “Are you the race director?” It usually means something has gone wrong and I need to fix it, which in a nutshell describes my job race weekend (in addition to picking up trash)….although I did have a quite a few athletes come up to me and say what a great race it was. Race Weekend: Race...

Luray Triathlon: Viewpoint of the Race Director: Pre-Race

The 4th Annual Luray International and Sprint Triathlons were held at Lake Arrowhead in Luray, VA this past weekend with more than 500 athletes competing each day including 30 athletes who earned a “Luray Double” hand-engraved goblet by successfully finishing both races. Athletes represented 19 different states with 75% coming from Virginia. The youngest competitor was 14 and the oldest was 76. As triathletes, we tend to write and read a lot of athlete race reports, so I want to write something from a different perspective: a Race Director’s Race Report. Brief...

My interview on WHSV Ch. 3 about the Luray Triathlon

Last night I participated in a tourism meeting organized by the Luray – Page County Chamber of Commerce. I was there to promote the Luray Triathlon to the Page County businesses. The Luray Triathlon, now in its fourth year, will bring in 1,200 athletes plus spectators to Luray and Page County on race weekend – August 15 and 16 – which brings in significant tourism money to the community. Below is a news report on the event in which I had the opportunity to be interviewed: Page County Trying to Attract Tourists Luray, Va. Posted: 10:34 PM Mar 4, 2009 Last Updated: 3:25 PM...
