Focus – Nothing Else Matters

“Nothing else matters.” - Metallica This quote is written across the bottom of my triathlon “Vision Sheet” – my written statement of what I want to accomplish this year in the sport of triathlon and that I have pasted to my bathroom mirror so that I see it every single day.  My written statement is my dream I will realize if my hundreds of hours of training and single-minded focus converge with perfect race day conditions and perfect race execution on June 27th, 2010 at Ironman Couer d’Alene in Idaho. Whenever I sit down and think about what it takes to...

Triathlon Training Camp in the Canary Islands

Today is day 11 of my trip to Fuerteventura, an island in the Spanish Canary Islands off the coast of northwest Africa, to help at German pro triathlete Olaf Sabatschus‘ triathlon training camp.  As you can see from the picture, it’s quite nice here and the cool ocean feels wonderful after a long ride and run. I came to Olaf’s triathlon training camp for two weeks in March for two reasons: First, I wanted the experience of working at an international camp alongside one of the best triathletes in the world and his top notch staff.  Olaf needed extra coaches to help lead the...

When I raced at the Ironman World Championship in Kona in 2002, I suffered like a dog. I left with no immediate desire to come back. “Train Hard, Rest Harder, Race Hardest…!”

“Train hard, rest harder, race hardest…!” - Olaf Sabatschus, professional triathlete and my triathlon coach Sage advice from one of the best long course triathletes in the world. However, the tendency for many athletes is to: “Train hardest and race hard!” and ignore the importance of the “rest” component. The result is a sub-optimal race performance. Not intentionally of course. No one wants to race poorly, but it’s an easy path to go down by focusing too much on the training and not enough on the rest component. What do I mean by focusing too much...

Why Hire a Triathlon Coach?

Why Hire a Triathlon Coach?

Why hire a triathlon coach? Rather than tell you why you should hire me as a coach (…maybe you shouldn’t!), I’ll share why I hired a triathlon coach for myself. In 2006, I fell short of my sub-nine hour goal at the Quelle Challenge in Roth, Germany. In spite of a renewed focus on training and more time for training, I did not achieve the breakthrough race that I hoped to achieve. I also realized that I had been racing at a performance plateau for several years. My own efforts to improve my performance were not successful so I needed a change in perspective and training routine. ...
