You are what you eat…err, rather, you are what think

“If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” - Henry Ford (1863-1946) Remember the adage, “You are what you eat?” There is a corresponding adage: “You are what you think.” In other words, your thoughts influence your feelings, which influence your behavior. Think positively and you’ll have positive outcomes. Think negatively and the opposite holds true. One of the most consistent findings in sport psychology research is that confidence – a belief in one’s abilities – is a positive a predictor of performance. If you have...

Race prep: Coach Debi Bernardes shares her pre-race plan for Ironman France

How do you prepare for a triathlon and especially an Ironman? I asked fellow triathlon coach, Debi Bernardes of UCANDOIT Coaching, who competed in Ironman France yesterday, for her pre-race plan, which is her write up of what she wanted her race day to be like.  Interestingly, she almost every goal on her way to a 12 hour finish and 2nd place in her age group. Writing a pre-race plan – with a positive outlook – is a powerful tool that will result in better results. Before the race, she met Mark Rensaw from Team HTC (pro cycling racing team) who commented when Debi told him she...

The number one thing holding you back: YOU

“Our doubts are traitors, And make us lose the good we oft might win By fearing to attempt.” - William Shakespeare in Measure for Measure A few years ago when I was still living in Reston and working in corporate America as a business analyst, I was not very happy with my job.  I felt like I was “stuck” with nowhere to go.   The salary and bonuses plus benefits were the nice golden handcuffs that kept me hanging on for a few years beyond when I should have stayed. I was afraid to start over in something new but when I finally sat down and really thought about my situation, I...

Do you need a coach? How can you afford not to have one…?

I am afraid of heights but I liked to climb “things” as a child (I still have a scar on my chin and forehead as evidence) so I started indoor sport climbing a few months ago to try something after more than 15 years of being a triathlete. I have no illusions that I’ll ever become a climber like Chris Sharma, but I’d still like to become a “decent” climber (and quickly) so that’s why I’ve been taking classes every week (i.e. hiring coaches) at Boulder Rock Club. Hiring a coach helps me with four things: 1. I accelerate my learning curve....

Commit to not commit may be the answer

It’s that time of the year at the end of the triathlon season when I check in with my coaching clients as to what they want to do next year. My email conversation with my client and friend Tom went like this: Come December, I believe it will be time to focus attention on Shamrock Marathon with an eye towards Triple-T Triathlon.  I really don’t think I’m going to race prior to Triple-T.  To be honest I really don’t see myself racing that much at all next year.  Maybe the occasional Virginia Tri Series race.  I plan on going to Lake Placid for a training camp in...
