Paul returns to Triathlon after 8 Years of Focusing on Job and Kids
I thought I would share this race report from on my clients, Paul Fedor, who recently returned to triathlon after taking an 8 +/- year break to focus on his job and kids. Ten or so years ago, Paul and I used to ride together quite frequently. Luray International on 8/14 was Paul’s first race back and the first step in getting him ready for his first Ironman-distance race in 2011. I enjoyed reading his report and thought he took away some valuable lessons learned for anyone new to the sport or returning after a hiatus, too. Here’s Paul’s race report: Luray...

As a triathlon coach, it’s always rewarding to see my clients succeed in their goals. When I sit down and think about what my client Dan Head accomplished at Beach2Battleship on November 7th, I am truly amazed. Beach2Battleship in Wilmington, NC was Dan’s first Ironman triathlon (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run), and he finished in an amazing time of 10:59. What makes Dan’s finish time so amazing is not that Beach2Battleship was his first Ironman race nor that he is 45 years old and works full-time as a consultant, but rather that Dan is a husband and father...

Vineman Triathlon 20th Anniversary – August 1, 2009 Finish Time: 9:53:38.3 for 4th Overall Swim: 00:57:39.0 T1: 00:02:18.5 Bike: 05:13:44.4 T2: 00:01:27.8 Run: 03:38:28.6 As I headed out of transition at the start of the 26.2-mile run, race announcer Dave Latourette yelled to me: “You’re 24 minutes back on the leader.” My heart sunk as a surge of disappointment and sadness welled up inside me. This was my 6th time racing in Vineman (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run) in Santa Rosa, CA, and I had won the race two years ago by taking the lead at the end of the bike...

My client Fabrice Guillaume completed his first Iroman last weekend – Ironman France in Nice, France, finishing in a time of 11:29:51 on arguably one of the hilliest Ironman courses in the Ironman series. As his triathlon coach, I consulted with Fabrice approximately once a month since late last year as he first created a high level triathlon training plan with distinct training periods (e.g. off season, base building, tapering, etc) then later broke each week down into detailed daily workouts. What impressed me was his methodical and purposeful approach to finishing his first...

My first Ironman, Ironman Canada, was about finishing. The race was an unknown quantity. I was fairly confident that I could finish the event because I had done the proper training but I had no idea what to expect. My second Ironman, Great Floridian Triathlon, was about recapturing the ecstasy of the finish. I wanted the finish line “high” that I felt at Canada. Vineman Full in 1998 was different. I wanted to go faster. At the time, the Vineman Full was still a Hawaii Ironman Qualifier – there were 25 precious slots to be given away to the top athletes in each group. ...
